Adrian Kunzle and Kevin Madsen took the new #678 Ligier JS2R Rapscallion entry to the top of the time sheets Friday morning and to impressive results in both WRL endurance races.
After a successful 2nd-place debut racing for 13 hours last month at Colorado’s High Plains Raceway, Adrian Kunzle partnered with co-driver Kevin Madsen to debut the #678 Remo Health / Race for RP Ligier JS2R. The duo traveled to Utah last weekend for the World Racing League Crossroads Endurance Challenge at Burt Brothers Motorpark as a second entry for Texas-based Rapscallion Motorsports. The #678 joined the existing #669 STAK Racing by Rapscallion entry of Tim Adams and Ken Sanders for a two-car effort in World Racing League GTO class competition.
After Adrian and Kevin refined the Ligier in Friday’s practice sessions, Adrian was able to make continuous improvements in qualifying around the 3.05 mile BBM outer course. This resulted in a 6th-place starting position out of 12 cars in class for Saturday’s 8-hour race 1 of the Crossroads Endurance Challenge.
“The Ligier JS2R was setup perfectly, and excelled in the high-speed turns at Burt Brothers Motorpark,” noted Kunzle on his impressive qualifying effort. Teammate Madsen added praise, “Killer job by the team to improve the car quickly and excellent execution by Adrian to put us in the top half of the field for the start.”
In Saturday’s race, Adrian settled in during an opening double-stint. Aided by consistently quick pit stops by the Rapscallion team, Adrian and Kevin steadily drove the Ligier JS2R up the standings, and after great final stints by both drivers, narrowly missed the podium in 4th place.
For Sunday’s 7-hour race, Adrian again started from 6th place in the GTO class. Kunzle repeated his success from the previous day and settled into a consistent race pace. Madsen put the pedal to the metal in his stint and before long the duo found themselves in 3rd place. Unfortunately, a mechanical issue related to the newly designed rear wing reared its ugly head and meant a lot of lost time to make up.
Both drivers dug deep, using the pace of the Ligier and quick pit stops by the Rapscallion crew, to steadily regain positions. At the end of the seven hours, #678 finished 6th, but improved to 5th place after a competitor failed post-race tech.
After fifteen combined hours of WRL racing, Adrian remarked, “I’m very happy with the P4 and P5 that we earned, especially as this was my first time at this track. Getting comfortable with the track so quickly is all thanks to the Racing Cockpits simulator I was able to practice on ahead of time. I can’t wait to race the Ligier again with the team. So much fun!”
Teammate Madsen added, “Wow what a weekend for the STAK / Rapscallion boys! Great achievement for this growing team to have the Ligier JS2R set the fastest GTO lap in official sessions for the entire weekend and to have such impressive pace with each of the 4 drivers in both cars. Excited for the continuous improvement we’re seeing here.”
